Wednesday, 10th June 2020

Good morning!

This is your planning for today:

1) Open your Social Science digital book on page 104 and 105. Let's study what's the European Union and its main important facts.

As we said in the class, Europe and the European Union are not the same concept.

  • Europe is the continent made up of all European countries.
  • The European Union is an economic and political "association" of some European countries, but not all.

The European Union aims:

1) Prevent war between its countries: the European Union thinks that countries that trade (comercian) with each other, won't go to war with each other.

2) The European Union works to promote security, peace and good relations between European countries.

3) The European Union (EU) promotes solidarity between its countries. Richer countries are supposed to help countries with less resources.
This is happening at this moment: Spain is asking for resources (money) to richer countries in the EU to improve Spanish economy.

4) The EU collaborate ans share advances and discoverments in science and technology.

It was not until 1992, when this group of countries was called European Union (EU). Before this year, it had two other names:

  • 1952: European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC).
  • 1957: European Economic Community (EEC).
Spain got into the Eropean Economic Community in 1986, with Portugal, too.

Since 2002, the euro (€) was introduced. This is the common coin in most European countries (exception: United Kingdom).

The United kingdom got into the EEC in 1973. But last year, the UK abandonned the EU through a process called Brexit (BREXIT = BRITAIN + EXIT)

2) Do the following activities on your Social Science notebook:

If you have any question, please, ask me by email.

Thank you.

Tuesday, 9th June 2020

2) Let's start reading the introduction about the European Union: what it is, when it was created...

2) Do activities 1, 2 and 4 on page 98 on your Social Science digital book.

Thank you.

Wednesday, 13th May 2020

Good morning!

This is your planning for today:

1) Revise what we have studied before: Spanish democracy and Constitution and the three powers.

2) This unit is quite short and familiar to you. Today we will deal with the last part: Public services.

Open your Social Science digital book on page 94 and 95. Follow these instructions:

Public services are all the services provided by the government such as education or health.

The Constitution says that all Spanish citizens have the right of all these services, but also the responsability to pay taxes to pay them.

Depending on the service, it will be given by a different administration:

Taxes are paid in three different ways:

1. When we buy a product or a service we pay IVA (Impuesto del Valor Añadido). You can see it in any ticket.

2. Taking part of the workers' salary.

3. Taking part of the companies benefits.

Budget = presupuesto
It is the way the Spanish goverment use the Spanish money to pay the different public services.

As you can see in this chart, most of this money is used to pay pensions of retired people. They have spent all their lives working an paying taxes, too.

3) Put into practice all this information doing exercise 2 on page 95.

Thank you.

Tuesday, 12th May 2020

Hi!

This is your planning for today:

1) Revise what we have studied yesterday about democracy and the Spanish Constitution 1978.

2) Let's continue learning about how Spain is organized.
Remember that in History we have been saying that since the 20th century there were many attempts to separate power in" three branches: "judicial, legislative and executive power". This is what we are going to study today.

Open your Social Science digital book on page 90 and 91. Follow these steps:

The separation of powers is determined by the Spanish constitution.
Having the three powers separated, decisions are taken by different parts of the government.
It avoids that power concentrates in only one part of the goverment.

As you know, these are the 3 powers:

1. The legislative power.

2. The judicial power.

3. The executive power.

Let's start with the legislative power.
The legislative power is in charge of making the laws, passing the state's budgets (presupuestos del estado; en qué se va a gastar el dinero) and controlling the government's activity.
This happens in the Paliament (Las Cortes Generales).

Since March, each Tuesday, there is a control session to check how the government is dealing with the Coronavirus crisis. In this session is where president Pedro Sánchez asks for 15 days more of "alarm state" (estado de alarma).

The Parliament is divided in 2 parts: the Congress and the Senate.

  • The Congress (El Congreso de los Diputados): laws are presented, debated and, finally, passed. The Congress is made up by 350 deputies (diputados), elected by citizens in the Spanish general elections.
  • The Senate (el Senado): once laws are passed by the Congress, the Senate will revise and check this decision. The Senate is made up by 260 senators. They represent Spanish autonomous communities, provinces and autonomous cities. Most of them are elected in the general elections and a minority are elected in the paliaments in each autonomous community.

The judicial power is dealt by judges (jueces) in judiciaries (juzgados) and tribunals.
They interprete the laws and decide the appropriate punishment if this law has been broken.

The executive power puts into practice laws

It is composed by the prime minister and ministers.

Prime minister: Pedro Sánchez

I'm sure that nowadays some ministers are quite familiar to you. For example:

Minister of Education: María Isabel Celaá

Minister of Health: Salvador Illa.

An absolute majority happens when most of the deputies in the Congress are from the same political party.

Nowadays, Spain is ruled by a coalition government

PSOE + Unidas Podemos

PSOE won the elections but it didn't have the absolute majority in the Congress. That's why PSOE and Unidas Podemos agreed to govern together in a coalition government. Together, they have more deputies in the Congress than if they govern alone.

3) Organise all the information that you have learnt about the three powers doing the chart on exercise 2 on page 91.

Then revise what we have learnt yesterday doing these exercises:

If you have any question, please ask me by email.

Thank you.

Monday, 11th May 2020

Good morning!

This is your planning for today:

1) Open your Social Science digital book on page 88 and 89 . Follow these steps:

Today we will study what's democracy and the Spanish Constitution of 1978. It should sound familiar to you because we mention it at the end of unit 4.

Democracy: citizens can vote to choose their representatives to govern the country in elections.

The Spanish Constitution 1978 is document where we can find all our rights (derechos), but also all our responsabilities (deberes) as Spanish citizens. Look at the chart to see some examples:

In Spain, there are 4 different elections:

  • General elections: citizens vote for the president and the representatives in the parliament.
  • Regional electionscitizens vote for the president and the representatives in the parliament of their autonomous community.
  • Local electionscitizens vote for the mayor (alcalde/alcaldesa) and the representatives in the local government.
Generally, these elections take place each 4 years. Only Spanish citizens older than 18 years old can vote.

  • European elections: citizens vote for their  representatives in the European parliament. These elections take place each 5 years. All European citizens olders than 18 years old can vote.

2) Do the following 2 activities on your Social Science notebook to practice what you have learnt.

Social Science book, page 89 exercise 2

3. Circle the correct answer.
·         a) In a democracy, we can all go to school and have access to things such as hospitals and doctors.
Right                    Responsibility
·         b) In a democracy, we cannot discriminate against people because of what they believe or where they come from.
Right                    Responsibility
·         c) In democratic society, we pay taxes to provide for our public services. These include roads, rubbish collection and things like that.
Right                    Responsibility
·         d) In a democracy, we are free to live anywhere we like and no one can stop us from travelling wherever we like.

Right                    Responsibility

Thank you.
